0014 - 8088

I was commenting recently on the lack of information online about 3D Picnic. Relative to 8088 though, the interwebs hold a veritable 30-volume encyclopaedia of 3D Picnic knowledge. The only certain info I can find are the listening stats on Last.fm for the one 8088 song I have, which are, I think (and this is part of the problem), credited to a different, more recent, 8088 (I think, in fact, that there might be three 8088s - this one from the mid-80s, another from the late 90s and yet another from the early 2010s, as well as a DJ 8088).

This is a real pity, as Stick Man is a really rather good piece of 80s electro-pop, bringing to mind Howard Jones and Thomas Dolby:

In fact, the only real negative criticism I have of the song is that it lacks a bit of polish compared to, say, the Howard Jones linked above.

I suppose, looking back from an age of ubiquitous computing, naming yourself (presumably) after the processor from the original IBM PC - the device that, along with its clones, truly democratised and popularised computing, even if it wasn't nearly so cool as, say, the Amiga, Atari ST or Apple 2 - wasn't a particularly good idea if you wanted to be remembered, or even findable, on the internet that didn't yet exist.

I feel a bit sad for 8088 though, as even if this was the only song they ever released, it's a good one and deserves to be remembered. I am again grateful to the Scavenged Luxury blog for bringing this one to my attention - get over there and download it.
