0028 - Paula Abdul

I was expecting Paula Abdul - or to give her full name, My Homegirl Paula Abdul - to be the first entry on this blog that I was a bit embarrassed about.  There will be plenty of music I write about in the future that I'd rather not admit to owning, but write about it I will.  It turns out, though, that I actually quite like my Paula Abdul song.

I'm not getting carried away here, Straight Up is no classic.  It's incredibly lightweight, musically it's a cheesy amalgam of most that was wrong with the late 80s mainstream, vocally it's Madonna-lite, but it's ok.  I can't imagine ever choosing to play it, other than in circumstances like these, but if it comes on the radio, I certainly won't switch it off.

And the girl can dance, no question.  A bit less attitude and a bit more joy wouldn't go amiss though.  Joy, that's what dancing should be:

Straight Up was the first of six US number ones for My Homegirl, which I think is pretty good going for a former cheerleader.

  2. Jesus! I've been feeling old today because it's 20 years since Trompe Le Monde and Nevermind were released, but that's nothing compared to how old Footloose makes me feel.

I actually saw it in the cinema. That's how old I am.
